What affiliate marketing actually is
You recommend a product, someone buys it through your link, and the retailer pays you a percentage. That is the whole mechanism. Everything else — the niche research, the SEO, the email list — exists to put your recommendation in front of somebody at the exact moment they are deciding.
Which means the job is not selling. The job is being the most useful page a person finds when they are two minutes from making a purchase they are unsure about. Get that right and the commission is a side effect.
Step 1: Choose a niche you can win
The standard advice is “follow your passion” or “find high search volume”. Both are half-answers. Passion without commercial intent produces an audience that never buys; volume without expertise produces pages nobody trusts.
- Can you be genuinely useful here? Either you already know the subject, or you are willing to spend months becoming credible in it.
- Do people buy things in it? Not “is it popular” — is there a purchase decision, at a price where a percentage matters.
- Is the top of the search results beatable? If page one is entirely major publishers, pick a narrower slice.
Step 2: Pick programmes before you write
Writing forty articles and then looking for something to link to is the most common sequencing error in this business. Find the programmes first, because they determine what is worth writing about at all.
- Cookie window. Twenty-four hours versus thirty days matters far more than 4% versus 6%.
- Approval difficulty. Some networks reject new sites outright. Know before you build.
- Payout reliability. A generous rate you cannot withdraw is not income.
Step 3: Build the three pages that do the work
Three formats generate the overwhelming majority of affiliate revenue: the single-product review, the head-to-head comparison, and the “best X for Y” list. Everything else builds the authority that makes those three rank.
Step 4: Write reviews people trust
A trustworthy review tells you early what the verdict is, says who the product is wrong for, and contains at least one detail that could only have come from actually using the thing. That last point is the whole game.
Step 5: Disclose clearly, every time
Disclosure is not optional and it is not a footer link. Counter-intuitively, clear disclosure tends to improve conversion — readers already assume a commercial relationship, and stating it plainly removes the suspicion that you are hiding something.
What realistic results look like
- Months 1–3. Almost nothing. You are building the foundation later pages rank on.
- Months 4–6. First commissions. Small, irregular, psychologically important.
- Months 7–12. Compounding begins. Older articles earn without further work.
- Year two. Where the income becomes worth the hours.
Top pick
Outstanding stabilisation and colour straight out of camera.
